Ok I am supposed to be on tumblr hiatus and have crazy exams coming up BUT SOMEONE IN MY UNIVERSITY ACTUALLY WROTE THIS IN OUR STUPID NEWSLETTER! This is just a small small excerpt from an astonishingly sexist article that basically says 1. describing harassment is vulgar and 2. why aren’t you in your hijab where you’re supposed to be you whore. So exams can wait, I just want to know, something- last year egypt had this anti-sexual harassment day for people to blog and write articles and stuff, is that going to happen this year as well?

The male gaze and why I miss it

Margaret Wente bravely exposes that the real victim of sexual harassment is her bruised ego. Ladies, enjoy it while you can because you won’t always have unsolicited attention to validate your vanity!

It’s anti sexual harassment week, and I just remembered a conversation I had with someone a few months ago.

His best friend was calling him from a beach in America, and was yelling obscene things in Arabic at the women, including (if I remember correctly) “I have a condom”. He was telling me about it because he thought it was hilarious.

Interview with Noha Roshdy, the first Egyptian woman to file a sexual harassment lawsuit and win. She was groped by the driver of a pickup truck and dragged through the streets. She actually chased the car down and took her assailant to a police station with the help of her friend and a stranger. Her story was part of the inspiration for the movie 678.

Anyway, the whole interview is worth watching, but one part in particular really stands out because it perfectly demonstrates the lengths some people would go to in order to blame the victim. One viewer calls in to tell them that, in his opinion, Noha held 30% of the blame because “she was probably wearing something provocative, or laughing too loudly”.

Yeah. Laughing.

(It starts about 2 minutes into the video)

Just like when the story of the blue bra woman broke out, some people started talking about what she should have been wearing and why she shouldn’t have even been there in the first place. These are not precautions that we repeat out of concern for anyone’s safety. They are excuses for our complacency.

Cairo 678 tackles sexual harassment in the Arab World by telling the story of three women from different backgrounds but have all been sexually harassed. It was directed and written by Mohamed Diab.

Everyone needs to see this movie. It is outstanding.

A sappy Egyptian video titled ‘How to be Happy’, which includes the usual stuff you’d expect: listen to good music, be confident, sexually harass an ugly girl, love your family— wait, what?!
